De-influencing is helping to drive clothing donations to The Salvation Army
As social media undergoes a cultural shift, the fast-paced cycle of consumption encouraged by influencers is giving way to a powerful new movement coined as de- influencing. Rather than pushing the latest trends, creators are urging followers to buy less, choose thoughtfully, and rethink their impact.
Some TikTok creators are now using their platforms to discourage overconsumption and challenge the influencer driven “buy now” culture that dominates social media feeds, with the #deinfluencing hashtag.
The movement aims to encourage more sustainable practices, raise awareness on environmental issues and social impact. Leading the way with innovative services to appeal to a new wave of de-influencers is Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL), the trading arm of The Salvation Army. Through reuse and recycling schemes, SATCoL help to divert millions of items away from disposal each year whilst, helping to raise vital funds for charity.
SATCoL’s free Donate by post service, is one of their many initiatives helping to reduce waste and extend the useful life of products. Donate by Post is a free and easy way for supporters to send clothing, handbags and shoes to be resold in Salvation Army charity stores across the country. By simply generating a free label and dropping parcels at any 24/7 InPost locker, donors can ensure their items are reused or repurposed.
Thanks to de-influencing, the growing cultural change is helping to encourage more consumers to value second-hand fashion. SATCoL’s Donate by post service is a practical way to turn this much needed shift into action. In the last year alone, SATCoL received 94% more parcel registrations for Donate by Post, showing how the surge in fashion ordered by the click of a button and delivered by post can equally be a channel for positive environmental and social impact.
SATCoL invites the public to donate items they no longer need, in good condition using the Donate by Post service and join the movement.
